About St Basils Cathedral
The iconic cathedral at the head of Red Square. Built by Ivan the Terrible to mark the capture of Kazan. Nine chapels each wear a differently patterned onion dome. No two domes are alike. Legend says Ivan blinded the architects so nothing so beautiful could be built again. The narrow interior is a labyrinth of small chapels. It narrowly escaped demolition under Stalin.
