About Florence Cathedral

Crowned by the first great dome built since ancient Rome. Brunelleschi invented a double shell and herringbone brick pattern to build it without centering. The dome spans 150 feet and remains the largest masonry dome ever raised. The facade is polychrome marble in green, pink, and white. Giotto designed the campanile beside it. The inner Last Judgment fresco took 11 years to paint.
