About Tower Bridge
A combined bascule and suspension bridge over the Thames. High walkways connect its two towers. The bridge still opens about 800 times a year. Steam originally powered the lifting mechanism until 1976. Each bascule counterweight weighs over 1,000 tons. Often confused with London Bridge. Victorian Gothic cladding hides a steel frame.
