About Brooklyn Bridge
The first steel wire suspension bridge ever built. Its main span stretches 1,595 feet over the East River. Took 14 years and claimed about 30 lives. Designer John Roebling died before construction began. His son Washington was crippled by the bends and his wife Emily ran the site for 11 years. The neo-Gothic stone arches were built to reassure a wary public.
