The Great Mosque of Cordoba, later converted into a cathedral. Its forest of 856 columns of jasper and marble supports striped double arches. The mihrab is a masterpiece of Byzantine mosaic work. Built by successive rulers from 785 onward. A Renaissance nave was inserted at its center in the 16th century. Charles V reportedly lamented replacing something unique with something ordinary.
