Began leaning during construction due to soft ground. The tilt reached 5.5 degrees before stabilization. 294 steps to the top. The tower is 183 feet tall on the low side. Stabilization work from 1990-2001 reduced the lean by 17 inches. Galileo allegedly dropped objects from the top.
