About Rock Churches of Lalibela
Eleven medieval churches carved downward into volcanic rock. Built as a New Jerusalem after conquests blocked pilgrimage routes. Each church is monolithic, freed from the bedrock around it. Bete Giyorgis is carved in the shape of a perfect Greek cross. Trenches and tunnels link the whole complex. Still a living heart of Ethiopian Orthodox worship.
