About Great Zimbabwe
The largest ancient stone structure south of the Sahara. Capital of a trading empire that dealt in gold and ivory. The Great Enclosure walls reach 36 feet high and 17 feet thick. Built without mortar from neatly coursed granite blocks. Up to 18,000 people lived around the site. Abandoned around 1450 as trade and resources declined.
