Could seat 50,000 to 80,000 spectators. The velarium was a massive retractable awning operated by sailors. Had 80 entrances allowing evacuation in minutes. The hypogeum underground had 36 trap doors for animal and gladiator entrances. Over 400,000 humans and 1 million animals died in the arena.
